New, free music extension course for public college students

Released 25/08/2020

The ACT Government and the Canberra Institute of Technology have developed a new music extension course that will provide public college students with free access to a Certificate III or IV in Music Industry.

Students who have an ambition to be professional performers will have their dreams ‘kick-started’, developing their skills through public music events and studio recording sessions as part of the CIT music course.

This new program will provide ACT public college students with access to enhanced music offerings as they complete their year 11 and 12 studies.

The course will strengthen music theory and composition knowledge, music performance ability in contemporary styles, and gain essential skills for working in the music industry.

This program will see college students completing a Tertiary package graduating with a Senior Secondary Certificate, an ATAR, and a Certificate III or IV in Music Industry.

On completion this vocational qualification can be a pathway to either the Diploma program at CIT or to ANUs School of Music.

Through the Future of Education Strategy, this government is focussed on building strong communities for learning which are critical in providing students the very best chance for a bright future.

This program empowers public school students to tread their own educational pathway in pursuit of their musical aspirations.

The capacity of the CIT course to prepare students for a professional career in the music industry is evident in Canberra’s very own Citizen Kay (Kojo Owusu-Ansah), a graduate of CIT’s music course.

Citizen Kay is a two-time ARIA nominated hip-hop artist, producer and sound engineer. The 24 year old has toured and performed with multiple leading international artists.

The ACT has incredibly talented students and it’s important to provide opportunities for young people to succeed and achieve their dreams.
