Stromlo Leisure Centre construction complete

Released 17/07/2020

In welcome news for the Molonglo region, the ACT Government has completed construction on the state-of-the-art Stromlo Leisure Centre.

The new $36 million facility has been handed over to YMCA NSW who will finalise preparations ahead of opening day on Saturday 15 August 2020.

With sweeping views across Canberra, the centre will boast a 50-metre pool with moveable bulkhead, warm water program and learn to swim pool, leisure pool, toddlers pool, a splash park with a giant tipping bucket and slides, health club and creche.

Minister for Sport and Recreation Yvette Berry said the Centre would provide a welcoming destination for Canberrans looking for more ways to get active, relax and learn critical water safety skills.

“The Stromlo Leisure Centre offers the community another place for family and friends to come together and aquatic programs to keep Canberrans active and safe in the water,” Minister Berry said.

“Importantly, the centre will provide ongoing employment opportunities with more than 80 jobs created to operate the centre. More than 80 local and interstate contractors and over 1,100 individuals were contracted for the construction of the Stromlo Leisure Centre.

“The ACT Government is committed to delivering great infrastructure for the community and Canberrans will be able to enjoy this facility for generations to come,” Minister Berry said.

The Centre will be a great addition to Stromlo Forest Park which already includes world-class mountain bike trails, criterium circuit, running track, and equestrian trails.

The construction of Stromlo Leisure Centre began in 2018 and is a key part of the Stromlo Forest Park Master Plan.

YMCA NSW will officially open the centre for members and casuals on Saturday 15 August 2020.

“We are counting down the days to our August 15 opening and cannot wait to share this truly awesome facility with the ACT community,” CEO of the Y NSW Susannah Le Bron said.

“We’ve already had more than 1,300 people express interest in joining the Y at Stromlo and know Canberrans are just as excited as us to get on top of their health and wellness goals against the beautiful backdrop of the Molonglo Valley. I’m thrilled today to announce Foundation Memberships will go on public sale from next week.

“Access to the site will be limited to members and casuals with bookings in line with COVID-19 restrictions to ensure everyone can work out and connect in a safe way.”
