Released 03/03/2020

The ACT Government’s $36.49 million Stromlo Leisure Centre in Molonglo Valley is on track to be completed by mid-2020 at which stage the keys will be handed to YMCA NSW to open and operate the centre.

Following a competitive tender process, YMCA NSW has been awarded the contract to operate the Stromlo Leisure Centre. YMCA NSW currently operate the Gungahlin Leisure Centre, Lakeside Leisure Centre and Canberra Olympic Pool.

Minister for Sport and Recreation, Yvette Berry said, “The Stromlo Leisure Centre will feature an extensive aquatic centre and gym that will be available to this fast-growing community. More than 100,000 Canberrans in Weston Creek, Woden and the Molonglo Valley will be served by the facility.

"Facilities like this are so important for bringing active communities together, especially in an area like this with lots of young families. It’s also important that everyone has an equal opportunity to participate.

“The Centre will be accessible to all Canberrans and host to a range of activities like learn to swim classes, aqua aerobics, and various types of warm water and gentle exercise programs.

“The new Centre will build on the range of other facilities and activities available to Canberrans in the city’s south, such as the world-class mountain bike trails, a criterium circuit, running tracks, equestrian trails and the relocated container village from West Basin,” Minister Berry said.

Extensive community consultation shaped this new Centre, which features a 50 metre pool, program pool, leisure pool, toddlers pool, splash park, gym, creche and space for many members of the community to enjoy.

The facility is on track for a hand over in the later part of the first half of this year, and the Territory will work with YMCA NSW on confirming an opening date to announce soon.

“The Y NSW is thrilled to be awarded the opportunity to deliver our fitness and aquatic expertise for such an impressive, cutting-edge centre,” CEO of the Y NSW, Susannah Le Bron said.

“This contract is a continuation of our strong partnership with the ACT Government at the Canberra Olympic Pool, Gungahlin Leisure Centre and Lakeside Leisure Centre and we are looking forward to providing even more opportunities for health, wellness and community connection for the great people of the Territory.”
