Supporting women’s health, wellbeing and safety

Released 08/07/2020

The ACT Government is providing funding for seventeen projects that will support the health, wellbeing and safety of women in Canberra through a $180,000 grant program.

Today I announced the 17 individuals, organisations and community groups to receive funding through the Women's Participation and Safety Grants program.

$80,000 is targeted to projects that focus on women's participation, improving outcomes for women and advancing gender equality in the ACT. Prioritising these issues supports the work of the ACT Women's Plan 2016-2026.

One of the recipients, Women with Disabilities ACT, will receive funding to establish a peer support group for their members who are currently parents or plan to be parents. This support group will be a place for them to share their unique experiences and receive the support of a strong network when they need it most.

$100,000 is targeted to projects that focus on safety for women and reduce violence against women and their children.

One of the recipients, Canberra Community Law, will receive funding to establish a coordinated referral and specialist intake service to help navigate support systems to secure housing and independence for women in, or leaving, family violence.

The community will continue feel the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. This may put some women at further risk of harm and social isolation. These grant programs and projects are so important to supporting community resilience.

Some other grants recipients include:

  • Domestic Violence Crisis Service (DVCS) to develop a resource with information on DVCS services in a range of different languages;
  • Roundabout Canberra to produce and distribute more 'Basics Boxes' for Canberra babies of vulnerable families in the ACT; and
  • The Indigenous Marathon Foundation to deliver an online coaching program to improve fitness and self-confidence in Indigenous and non-Indigenous women.

The ACT Government is committed to supporting women and girls through new programs that advance gender equality, addrss women's safety and empower women to succeed.
