More than 50,000 students are returning to public schools across Canberra this week – including at Evelyn Scott School in Denman Prospect, the ACT’s 89th and newest public school.
This is a very exciting time for students and families across the city. For some it is the beginning of a great education adventure. For others, it is the continuation of their learning journey.
This is also an exciting time for more than 150 new teachers joining ACT public schools this year. Welcome to you all, you will all be such an important part of the lives of so many students and I look forward to visiting you in class.
For the 187 students starting at Evelyn Scott School it is a unique experience being the first cohort of students walk through the doors of a brand new, state-of-the-art school. As the area continues to grow, this modern school facility will eventually have 600 K-6 students and in 2023 construction will be complete on the high school.
Today, new students across ACT public schools are being provided with a Chromebook device to support their education and ensure equitable access to technology. This nation-leading investment also provides flexibility as we continue through COVID-19.
As we kick off a new school year, the ACT Government reconfirms its commitment to equity and inclusion. A child’s background or circumstances shouldn’t determine whether or not they can access a great education and reach their potential.
The ACT Government will also continue upgrading and expanding schools to make sure every child has a place at a great local public school.
I wish all the students, teachers and staff a great first day of term and a fantastic 2021 school year.
