Local Engagement

The ACT Government has long recognised the need to engage with the surrounding NSW local Councils through entities such as the Canberra Region Joint Organisation, and by way of direct engagement with the Councils bordering the ACT and in the broader Canberra region.

In 2023, the ACT Chief Minister and Chair of the Canberra Region Joint Organisation (CRJO) re-committed to the CRJO-ACT Memorandum of Understanding (CRJO-ACT MoU), last signed in 2018. The CRJO is an organisation of local Councils across the South East and Tablelands Region of NSW, which (including the ACT) form the Canberra Region. The ACT Government is an associate member of the CRJO, acknowledging the importance of our relationship with the surrounding region. The total population of the CRJO region including the ACT is over 800,000, encompassing an area of approximately 70,000 km². The CRJO and ACT Government work cooperatively on issues and projects of mutual interest that support the Canberra Region's future prosperity.

We are a proud member of the Canberra Region Joint Organisation. The vision of the CRJO is 'advocating for strong regional partnerships that delivers improved outcomes to our regional communities’. Together with the CRJO we are committed to transforming the Canberra Region into a vibrant, sustainable and thriving region.

Working closely with Councils and its affiliate members, the CRJO provides collaboration and funding opportunities for Councils to drive large-scale and imperative infrastructure projects, investment opportunities and socio-cultural progress.

Membership of the CRJO provides a platform for the ACT Government and NSW Local Governments to collectively pursue regional benefits and improve outcomes for the ACT and Canberra Region community, including facilitating close regional cooperation, resource sharing, and cultivating shared investment and infrastructure development opportunities. The CRJO-ACT MoU is underpinned by an annual priority list.
