More than 600 of the new trees which will form the centre-piece of the revitalised landscaping along Northbourne Avenue through the light rail project have arrived in Canberra today to continue their growth prior to planting along the corridor.
The Brittle or Broad leafed Manna gum, (Eucalyptus mannifera) have arrived at Yarralumla Nursery after ‘chasing the sun’ interstate in Gippsland where the weather was milder over winter which supported their growth.
The Manna gums will form an important part of the revitalisation of the entrance to the bush capital as part of the light rail project, with an estimated 14 per cent more trees to be planted along the iconic route and further landscaping works bringing a modern feel to the gateway.
The 600 gums that have arrived will remain growing at Canberra’s Yarralumla Nursery, before being planted with a further 300 deciduous and native trees along the corridor during various stages of light rail construction.
The Manniferas will be monitored by local horticultural experts, who will continue to manage their growth. It is anticipated the trees will be approximately four metres tall by the commencement of light rail operations in 2018.
Yarralumla Nursery General Manager Chris Ware said the tress had arrived safely and nursery staff will continue to keep their growth on track.
“Having the trees grown in West Gippsland has allowed them to establish themselves in an area with a much milder winter than Canberra, helping them achieve optimal growth,” Mr Ware said.
“The gums are currently growing in 400mm pots and will be transplanted into larger containers to allow further growth until the time of planting along the Northbourne Avenue corridor.
“We understand the important role trees play in our city, the bush capital, and the nursery is pleased to support the healthy growth of these trees through the expertise the team has.
“We also recognise the broader interest in the community around these trees and updates will be provided of their growth for members of the community who may be interested through the Transport and City Services social media channels.”
