Old Tom and Mr Chicken to leap off the page at Woden Library

Released 27/10/2016

Children will have the opportunity on Saturday 29 October 2016 to learn about storytelling using pictures and create characters inspired by the current Australian Children’s Laureate at a workshop to be held at the Woden Library.

“Libraries ACT is delighted to host this visit from Leigh Hobbs who has introduced his colourful characters like Old Tom, Mr Chicken and Horrible Harriet in his series of children’s books,” Vanessa Little, Libraries ACT Director said.

“The best-selling author of more than 20 books will give children an opportunity to put their creative minds to the test and draw their own version of some of Leigh’s unforgettable characters during a free 90 minute session.

“Readers can borrow Leigh’s books from the library or read, watch and listen to them online through Libraries ACT eResources BorrowBox and Story Box Library.

“Commencing his two year tenure as Australian Children’s Laureate in February 2016, Leigh has been touring parts of Australia to promote the importance of reading, creativity and story in the lives of children. Saturday’s session is expecting to generate plenty of interest and bookings are essential.

“Events like Saturday’s are an exciting and engaging way to end ACT Children’s Week, and will help to inspire more children to visit their local library. Regular visits to the library lead to more reading and also help develop literacy skills in young minds,” Ms Little said.

The Australian Children’s Laureate is an initiative developed by the Australian Children’s Literature Alliance, a not-for-profit organisation founded in 2008. Previous authors who have held the important position include Jackie French, Alison Lester and Boori Monty.

The 90 minute drawing workshop and book signing will commence at 10.30 am at the Woden Library, Corinna Street, Phillip. Bookings are essential as places are limited.

Leigh Hobbs will also be participating in other events in Canberra on Friday and Saturday. More information can be found at www.library.act.gov.au
