Stage one of the construction of Canberra’s light rail from Gungahlin to Civic is well underway and as part of this enabling works to investigate and relocate existing utilities must be undertaken at two intersections along Northbourne Avenue.
This will require underboring and potholing works to be conducted at the intersections of Northbourne Avenue with:
- Barry Drive and Cooyong Street
- Rudd Street and Bunda Street
The ACT Government is advising motorists and other road users the works will require changed traffic arrangements to be put in place at each of these intersections. This may include reduced speed limits and temporary lane closures.
Works are scheduled to commence on Monday 7 November 2016 at the Barry Drive and Cooyong Street intersection then move south to the Rudd Street and Bunda Street intersection. Works are expected to be completed by Friday 2 December 2016, weather permitting.
To minimise traffic impacts, the majority of works will be carried out between 8 pm and 6 am, Monday to Friday. Some day shifts will be undertaken during off peak periods. Minor delays are expected.
During the works north bound traffic on Northbourne Avenue will not be able to turn right onto Cooyong Street while south bound traffic will not be able to turn right onto Barry Drive.
The works on the Rudd Street and Bunda Street intersection will require the closure of the intersection across the median. This will mean traffic on Bunda Street and Rudd Street will not be able to turn right onto Northbourne Avenue. North bound traffic on Northbourne Avenue will not be able to turn right onto Bunda Street while south bound traffic will not be able to turn right onto Rudd Street. There will be minimal impact to north bound or south bound movement on Northbourne Ave.
The works require a drilling rig and hydrovac truck. It is likely that local residents and businesses will hear some level of noise during these works. Steps are being taken to minimise the noise.
