Prescribed burns near Molonglo Valley and Hume

Released 07/08/2026

A prescribed ecological burn at Spring Valley Farm off Uriarra Road near Molonglo Valley and a prescribed cultural burn at Jerrabomberra West Grasslands Nature Reserve near Hume will commence today, 7 August, subject to suitable weather and fuel moisture conditions.

The prescribed ecological burn at Spring Valley Farm is being conducted to reduce dense plant growth to help native grasses and wildflowers grow.

The prescribed cultural burn at Jerrabomberra West Grasslands Nature Reserve will be conducted with Ngunnawal community representatives to retore native vegetation using traditional burning techniques.

See the location map of the burn sites.

Experienced ACT Parks and Conservation Service fire managers will conduct and oversee the burning operations. Every effort is made to conduct burns in weather conditions that will minimise the impact of smoke, but temporary smoke cover is possible and may be visible across parts of Canberra.

Fire crews will be on the ground monitoring and patrolling the prescribed burns to their conclusion.

Smoke, flame, and glowing embers may be seen at these sites, which is normal for these types of operations. The public are asked not to call emergency triple-zero unless they see any unattended fire.

Prescribed burns are an important part of the ACT’s annual Bushfire Operations Plan to enhance ecological quality, reduce the risk of bushfires and help keep Canberrans safe.

More information about prescribed hazard reduction burns is available on the Parks ACT website.
