Construction is continuing on several major infrastructure projects across Canberra, with temporary traffic changes required throughout September and October.
As Floriade brings additional visitors to the Territory, road users are encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time and stay informed about changing conditions.
Information on travel impacts is available at www.act.gov.au/builtforcbr/travel-impacts and public transport information on bus and light rail services can be found at www.transport.act.gov.au
Travel changes to support Light Rail Stage 2A construction
Construction of Light Rail Stage 2A between Alinga Street and Commonwealth Park will continue through September and October, with temporary road closures and lane reductions required on Northbourne Avenue and surrounding streets to safely deliver the works.
- Full closure of Edinburgh Avenue intersection between London Circuit and Knowles Place, and London Circuit between Edinburgh Avenue and Commonwealth Avenue from 8pm Friday 18 September to 5am Monday 21 September.
- Temporary closure of Gordon Street between Marcus Clarke St and London Circuit from 8pm Thursday 24 September to 5am Monday 28 September to enable track-related works
Plan ahead
These temporary changes will impact how people travel to and around the city. Road users are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra travel time, follow all detours and traffic control, and check live travel conditions before travelling.
Around 10,000 car parking spaces are available across the city, with free parking Wednesday to Sunday evenings from 5.30pm at nearby public car parks. More information and the city parking map are available at cityservices.act.gov.au/roads-and-paths/traffic/parking
The works also coincide with the Commonwealth Avenue Bridge Renewal project, delivered by the National Capital Authority, which has closed the northbound span of the bridge.

Access changes to Floriade
Visitors to Floriade should expect changes to traffic, pedestrian access and parking arrangements due to major infrastructure works in and around the city.
To help visitors get to Floriade this year, additional shuttle buses, operated by CDC Canberra will operate throughout the event, providing connections from key locations across Canberra. With changes to pedestrian and cyclist access on Commonwealth Avenue, new Floriade maps are available to guide cyclists and pedestrians to the festival.
Visitors are encouraged to plan their journey. For more information visit www.floriadeaustralia.com/getting-to-floriade.
Monaro Highway Upgrade traffic changes
The Monaro Highway is being upgraded to deliver improved safety, freight efficiency and faster and smoother travel for Tuggeranong, the Woden Valley and southern NSW.
Lanyon Drive will be closed between the northbound and southbound carriageways of the Monaro Highway from 7pm Friday 18 September until 5am Monday 21 September.
The closure is in place to allow for essential asphalting work.
During the closure, there will be detours through the Hume industrial area along Sheppard Street.
An alternative route for road users travelling from Jerrabomberra to north Canberra is to turn right on to Lanyon Drive at Tompsitt Drive and then use Canberra Avenue.
The Monaro Highway upgrade is part of a long-term program of improvements to enhance safety, freight efficiency, and journey reliability.
The project is jointly funded by the Australian and ACT Governments through the Infrastructure Investment Program.

Temporary closure of Coppins Crossing Road in September
The ACT Government is delivering roads and associated infrastructure upgrades to improve access in and around the Molonglo Valley, to keep Canberra moving as we grow.
To safely complete construction works adjacent to the roadway, Coppins Crossing Road between Holborow Avenue and Hazel Hawke Avenue, will be temporarily closed in both directions from 2am Monday 28 September to 6pm Friday 2 October.
A contingency may extend the closure until 6pm Sunday 4 October. Details will be updated on the Built for CBR Travel Impacts page if this occurs.
The temporary closure is required to safely complete construction works adjacent to the roadway, including earthworks, drainage installation and utility works.
In response to community feedback, the works have been scheduled during the school holiday period to help minimise impacts on road users.
This will be the last significant full closure required for the project. Completing these works during a single closure will help reduce future disruption, with only minor traffic impacts potentially required to complete final works.
Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, avoid peak travel periods where possible and allow extra time for their journey.
Detours are as follows:
- Southbound from Belconnen: From William Hovell Drive, take the off ramp to Parkes Way and merge onto the Tuggeranong Parkway.
- Northbound from Molonglo Valley: From John Gorton Drive, turn onto Cotter Road then follow the ramp onto the Tuggeranong Parkway, and take the left exit at Glenloch interchange to merge onto William Hovell Drive.
For details of changes to public transport during the closure, please refer to details on the Transport Canberra website at https://www.transport.act.gov.au/news/service-alerts-and-updates.
The new Molonglo River Bridge and completion of John Gorton Drive will significantly enhance connectivity across the Molonglo region and the wider Canberra road network and improving travel between the western suburbs including Denman Prospect and Whitlam.
The project is jointly funded by the Australian and ACT Governments as part of the Commonwealth's Infrastructure Investment Program.
More information on the Molonglo River Bridge project is available on the Built for CBR website
