The Commonwealth and ACT Governments are today formally marking 100 years since the gazettal of the Griffin Plan for the National Capital.
Designed by architects Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin, the plan set in motion the design of Australia’s first fully planned city and Capital as we know it today.
It is an enduring legacy that continues to shape the way Canberra evolves, ensuring the city remains one of the world’s most liveable places.
Their vision established Canberra’s defining structure, a city centre framed by grand axes, distinct districts, strong vistas, and the integration of nature throughout our town centres and suburbs.
The centenary is an opportunity to acknowledge the profound and lasting impact of the Griffin vision on Canberra’s identity.
As Canberra celebrates a century of the Griffin Plan, we reaffirm our commitment to honour this legacy while guiding the city toward a sustainable, resilient and prosperous future.

Quotes attributable to ACT Chief Minister, Andrew Barr:
Today we acknowledge this centenary milestone and reflect on the Griffin’s contribution to the National Capital.
With Canberra set to reach a population 500,000 people in the next few years our current infrastructure investments in central Canberra continue to support the Griffin vision.
For example, the construction of the north-south spine for light rail is guided by the original Griffin Plan.
The spirit of the plan will continue as we prioritise other initiatives that support our growing city - just as the Griffin’s intended.
Quotes attributable to Minister for Regional Development, Local Government and Territories, Kristy McBain:
The Griffin’s legacy is profound and continues to have an impact on how we view the city and plan its future.
It’s wonderful to commemorate this important milestone as we continue to see Canberra grow into a vibrant, sustainable city.
