Make your support for local business go further with ChooseCBR

Released 09/12/2020

ChooseCBR discount  vouchers can be used from today giving people another great reason to shop at  and support local businesses across Canberra.

With more than  17,000 people already signed up to the program, Minister for Business and  Better Regulation Tara Cheyne said it was hoped the program would provide a  real economic boost to local businesses at this crucial time of year.

The ChooseCBR  program will be trialled until 21 December with $500,000 worth of discount  vouchers available. The ACT Government will evaluate the program before a  second rollout next year worth $2 million.

"Businesses across  Canberra have had a tough year. We want to really kickstart our economy as we  go into 2021, drive investment and create more jobs, and ChooseCBR is one of  the ways we will do that.

"Businesses are  really excited about the program and the potential it gives them to attract new  customers and boost sales.

"We know that for  every $1 of government spending through ChooseCBR, businesses will benefit  between $4 and $6. So businesses that are involved have a real opportunity to  get a boost in the lead up to the holiday period."
Minister Cheyne said  that if 2020 had proven anything, it was that Canberrans love to support their  local, and shop at local businesses.

"Canberrans are so  supportive of Canberra businesses. We all know the importance of shopping local  after what we have collectively been through this year.

"With a great range  of businesses on board with ChooseCBR, I'd urge anyone who hasn't signed up yet  to get a ChooseCBR account, check out the great range of businesses in the  ChooseCBR Business Directory and get spending."

Minister Cheyne said  it's not too late for businesses to sign up and take part in the program.

"Any eligible  businesses that are still looking to sign up can do so at choosecbr.act.gov.au.

"Together we can  make 2021 a great year for local businesses across Canberra."

Quotes attributable to Fiona Lester, Owner of The Markets  Wanniassa:

"We're a  family-owned business and love what we do, so it was really hard to have to  close for six weeks earlier this year due to COVID.

"Now things are  gradually getting back to normal, it's great to see our customers returning and  our suppliers and makers getting back on their feet too.

"It's great to be  part of the ChooseCBR program which is all about supporting small businesses  like ours. We really want to encourage people to sign up to the program, and  hope we will see some new customers come through the door. It's a great boost  just before Christmas."
