Drivers encouraged to update details before SMS trial

Released 30/07/2021

From Monday 2 August 2021, the ACT Government will be sending SMS reminders for driver licence renewals as part of a three-month service improvement trial.

Minister for Business and Better Regulation, Tara Cheyne, encourages Canberrans with a driver licence to register, confirm or update their mobile number at www.act.gov.au/smsreminders so they are able to receive SMS reminders as their driver licence renewal due date approaches.

“We know life is busy and sometimes things get overlooked,” said Minister Cheyne.

“Reminders will be sent two days before driver licence renewals are due to provide drivers with a timely reminder to avoid expiry.

“This SMS trial is part of our work to continue to improve the way we deliver services to all Canberrans and to make life easier.

“The data tells us that a number of renewals and payments are made after expiry, so this should help more than 16,000 driver licence holders whose licences are due to expire during the trial period.

“This three-month trial will provide us an opportunity to test our systems before we look to see how it might be rolled out across a range of other transactions and registrations, including reminders for car registration renewals.”
