Celebrating Canberra's multicultural champions

The ACT Multicultural Awards celebrate and recognise the outstanding contributions of individuals and organisations that continue to make Canberra a welcoming and inclusive city.

Tonight the 2022 winners have been announced, they are:

  • Individual Champion: Dr Jane Chimungeni-Brassington. Dr Chimungeni-Brassington supports women from vulnerable and diverse backgrounds through a range of programs that she has created and been a part of. She is also a strong advocate for the Swahili-speaking Canberra community.
  • Community Organisation Champion: Her Kitchen Table Inc, who provide training and support for women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds as they work towards gaining economic independence.
  • Arts, Media or Culture: be:longing magazine, which has encouraging and enabling artistic expression and exploration across Canberra’s migrant community.
  • Outstanding Excellence for Diversity and Inclusion: Mr Nazmul Hasan. Mr Hasan has been mobilising support for some of the most vulnerable members of the community particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I would like to congratulate each of our winners and thank them for deep and abiding commitment to working towards a vibrant, diverse community, and to realising the benefits of this diversity in real and tangible ways,” said Minister for Multicultural Affairs, Tara Cheyne.

Six Highly Commended award recipients were also recognised, the full list of winners and highly commended recipients can be found on the Community Services Directorate website.
