Tis the season to consider pet adoption

Released 12/12/2024

With animal shelters across the ACT under strain, and many families spending more time at home together – it’s the perfect time to have a detailed conversation and make an informed decision about introducing a new pet into your family.

“The ACT Government’s Domestic Animal Services shelter in Symonston has been operating at capacity for months due to a high number of surrendered animals,” said Minister for City Services Tara Cheyne.

“While Domestic Animal Services has rehomed a total of 376 dogs in 2024 – 211 through adoption and 165 though Canberra’s dedicated network of animal rescue groups – there are still more than 30 dogs currently seeking a forever home, with more arriving at the shelter every day.”

Minister Cheyne said the holiday season is a perfect opportunity for families to consider adopting an animal for all the right reasons.

“This is the perfect time to discuss who will feed the animal and exercise them, what will the costs be and where they will sleep. All those tiny but vital conversations to ensure you’re ready to successfully introduce a new pet to your family,” she said.

“Most importantly, families with more time on their hands can meet a prospective new pet in person together, and carefully introduce existing pets to a new animal, ensuring it’s a smooth transition for all.”.

Domestic Animal Services, along with most other animal shelters and rescue groups in the region, have experienced a busy few years with increased animal numbers and length-of-stay for many animals seeking a home.

“I certainly appreciate how the cost of living has meant some animal owners have had to make the heartbreaking decision to surrender their pet. Nobody should be judged or blamed for that,” said Minister Cheyne.

“But I also believe there are other families out there who are in a position to adopt a new animal and experience all of the wonderful things a new pet can bring to the entire household.”

Canberrans are reminded that while we desperately want to rehome as many animals as possible, pets are not suitable as Christmas presents. They are a life-time commitment and require careful consideration.

“While our animal shelters are under significant pressure at this time of year, please never adopt or buy a pet as a gift to surprise a loved one.

“However, if you’re ready to expand your family and take on the responsibilities and rewards of pet ownership, there are many wonderful animals seeking a second chance in life at Canberra’s animal shelters – one of them may just be your perfect match,” Minister Cheyne concluded.
