New and upgraded paths connecting communities in Spence and Fraser

Released 26/03/2026

Works have commenced on path network upgrades in Spence and Fraser, helping to connect existing networks and provide upgrades that make active travel safer and more convenient for residents.

The new and upgraded sections of path run along Kuringa Drive and Kingsford Smith Drive and will be up to 3.0m wide in key sections to allow for high traffic during peak periods.

“We made a promise to the people of Spence and Fraser before the last election that we would upgrade the path network along Kuringa Drive,” said the Minister for City and Government Services, Tara Cheyne.

“It’s great to see construction starting on this important community infrastructure. The improvements will make the area safer, more accessible, convenient and enjoyable to walk, ride, or scoot around the area.

“Canberra has a comprehensive network of walking and cycling paths that make it safe and easy for people to move around our city.

“Path improvements like these are encouraging Canberrans to use active travel, which improves health and wellbeing, reduces the prevalence of chronic diseases and creates accessible communities."

The path improvement works are being delivered in two stages:

- Approximately 500 metres of new concrete path (1.5 metres wide) off Kuringa Drive, which connects from the west of Kingsford Smith Drive up to the existing path network that leads to Tillyard Drive.

- Approximately 700 metres of new asphalt and concrete path (3.0 metres wide) on Kuringa Drive from Owen Dixon Drive to Kingsford Smith Drive, and parallel to Kingsford Smith Drive to just past Clarey Crescent at the Spence Shops. These works include a new refuge island on Kingsford Smith Drive and a wombat crossing on Clary Crescent. New streetlighting will also be installed along this section of the path from Owen Dixon Drive to Spence shops.

The ACT Government maintains approximately 3,800 kilometres of community paths across Canberra. Ongoing maintenance activities are carried out across the network each year, including adding new connections and upgrading existing connections as needed.
