Firefighting helicopters arrive for the bushfire season

Released 17/12/2024

Two specialised firefighting helicopters have arrived in the ACT to support the ACT Rural Fire Service (ACTRFS) for the 2024 - 25 bushfire season.

The aircraft will play a key role in assisting with firefighting operations across the ACT as the weather heats up.

The helicopters will be based in the ACT until March 2025, during the time of year when bush and grass fires are most likely to occur.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services, Dr Marisa Paterson:

“The best way to stop bush and grass fires from causing major damage is by being prepared for them. It is fantastic to have the arrival of these helicopters to be based in the ACT, further preparing our emergency services with the technology they need to be ready if an emergency was to occur.

“In addition to conducting surveillance, these helicopters will be on call for any bush or grass fires and also be available for training drills and education to help upskill our ACTRFS volunteers.

“I would like to thank Microflite and Kestrel for supplying us with the helicopters, pilots, engineers and ground crew to assist us during our bushfire season.”

Quotes attributable to ACTRFS Chief Officer, Rohan Scott:

“During this season we will have two helicopters on standby in the ACT, the Firebird 100 and the HeliTac 101.

“Firebird 100 is a Specialised Intelligence Gathering (SIG) helicopter, able to provide crucial real time streaming and critical intel to teams on the ground. HeliTac 101 can assist with waterbombing and transporting remote area firefighting teams to those harder to reach areas.

“The arrival of these helicopters is an important step for our Agency's bushfire preparedness. We ask the community to also take their own steps to be emergency ready this season. For more information on how to do this, visit the ACT Emergency Services Agency website.”
