Canberra’s biggest Lunar New Year Festival celebrates Year of the Snake

Released 30/01/2025

The City Renewal Authority invites you to a vibrant street party on Woolley Street, Dickson, to welcome the Lunar New Year on Saturday 1 February 2025.

Marking the commencement of the lunar calendar and the Year of the Snake, the event will bring together community, culture and tradition in a free and family-friendly way. The event showcases the rich multiculturalism of the Canberra community and honours the diverse cultures that celebrate Lunar New Year.

This year, the City Renewal Authority is expanding the event area on Woolley Street even further, allowing more visitors and stallholders to take part in the festivities. With more than 11,000 attendees expected, the program is bigger and better than ever featuring 12 hours of entertainment across two stages. Attendees will be amazed by performances from Prosperous Mountain Lion and Dragon Dance, Federation of Chinese Associations ACT, K-Pop dancers, roving Zodiac performers, Kung Fu demonstrations and much more. Families can also enjoy the dedicated kid’s area with dance, balloon and calligraphy workshops throughout the day.

To commemorate the Year of the Snake, a stunning timber snake sculpture and moon gate reaching nearly three metres will take pride of place in the refurbished central plaza of Woolley Street. Made from salvaged wood and designed by Canberra’s KOITOYA studio, the sculpture is a must-see.
