The ACT Government is calling for Canberrans to have their say on how the Canberra Hospital campus will look and operate in the years to come.
Canberrans will be able to provide their input online and through a series of engagement opportunities across the first half of this year.
Minister for Health Rachel Stephen-Smith said the master plan would take account of feedback from this consultation as well as feedback received about already planned development at the campus, including the Canberra Hospital Expansion Project and the expansion of the Centenary Hospital for Women and Children.
“The ACT Government is committed to health care that puts patients and their families first and to providing the right hospital environment to meet the future health needs of the growing ACT and surrounding region,” Minister Stephen-Smith said.
“As Canberra’s population continues to grow, it is vital that we invest in our health facilities to cater for this growth - and that means being prepared with a long-term plan.
“Community consultation and stakeholder engagement through the first half of this year will ensure the ACT Government understands what is important to Canberrans about how the Canberra Hospital functions from a consumer perspective, including the types of public spaces and visitor/patient amenities that the community would like to see kept, enhanced, changed or created for the future.”
“The ACT Government is already supporting significant expansion and investment in health care services, both in our hospitals and in community settings” Minister Stephen-Smith said.
“Over the past decade, we have invested more than $1 billion dollars in health infrastructure, and we will continue to invest.
“On the Canberra Hospital campus we are investing more than $500 million in the Canberra Hospital Expansion, expanding and improving the Centenary Hospital for Women and Children and undertaking a range of other infrastructure projects with a combined value of more than $180 million.”
Following this phase of consultation and engagement, the ACT Government will release draft options for the project to seek input on the preliminary design features, including precincts, staging, open and green spaces, movement and accessibility, transport and parking.
Informed by the outcomes of the consultation, the master plan will ensure that future changes on the campus consider and reinforce those features that the community and stakeholders value and address the identified priorities for improvements.
The master plan is scheduled to be completed in 2021 and will guide physical improvements to the Canberra Hospital and the experience of visiting the campus over the next 20 years.
