The ACT Government will invest $50,000 into local initiatives seeking to contribute to the ACT’s reconciliation journey through the 2024 Reconciliation Grants.
The ACT is the only jurisdiction with a public holiday specifically focussed on advancing reconciliation. This year’s Reconciliation Day will be Monday 27 May.
The Reconciliation Grants support individuals and organisations who wish to host events and activities in the lead-up to or on Reconciliation Day. Applications are open now, with up to $5,000 available for each event and initiative.
Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs Rachel Stephen-Smith encouraged anybody thinking about marking Reconciliation Day in their community or organisation to apply for a grant.
“Reconciliation is about building an understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and cultures. It is about recognising our shared history and working towards a better future together.
“Reconciliation is everyone’s business, and I encourage Canberrans to be creative in how they recognise Reconciliation Day this year. This could involve hosting a workshop, sporting or community event, creating a mural or organising a yarning circle with local Elders.
“Individuals and not-for-profit organisations can apply for a grant and help promote reconciliation in their community,” said Minister Stephen-Smith.
Selina Walker, Co-Chair of the ACT Reconciliation Council and 2024 ACT Local Hero supports the broader community getting involved in reconciliation.
“Reconciliation Day provides an opportunity for Canberrans to come together, talk and learn from each other so we can all be a positive voice for generations.”
