The ACT Government is building the health infrastructure our growing city needs with the creation of a new and improved Yamba Drive entrance at the Canberra Hospital.
In the next step in Canberra Hospital’s modernisation, the area around the old Emergency Department and the Yamba Drive entrance will be transformed into a more welcoming and accessible space.
The improvements will include:
- a new bus stop to improve connections with public transport
- new seating
- a dedicated wheelchair collection point
- new art and sculptures to enhance the space
- new landscaping and green space
- shade cover to protect people from the elements and enhance comfort
- an upgraded courtyard area for staff.
These works will deliver a more inviting space for patients and visitors, integrating seamlessly with the new aesthetic of the growing hospital.
As part of the modernisation, the Building 2 foyer is also being updated to renew the public amenities in this space.
This work is already underway and will include new flooring and seating areas, a new Veterans Lounge, new Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Lounge, Gift Shop and Cafe.
Works will start from early September and will take about 12 months to complete.
With the new Building 5 now open, patients and visitors are encouraged to use the southern multistorey carpark and to access the hospital through the new Main Entrance and Emergency Department, via the southern end of Hospital Road, off Bateson Road.
A temporary pedestrian entrance will be available from Yamba Drive for those who need to access the hospital from the car parks or bus stops on that side of the campus.
This project is one of many happening across the Canberra Hospital campus. Other infrastructure upgrades underway or in the detailed design stage include the new Cancer Research Centre, Cancer Wellbeing Centre, palliative care ward and endoscopy suites.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Health Rachel Stephen-Smith:
These new works follow the opening of the new Building 5 in August and are a continuation of the ACT Government’s investment to modernise Canberra Hospital.
What was previously the old emergency entrance will be transformed into a more welcoming, modern and uplifting space, with new seating, shade cover and landscaping, as well as upgraded courtyard areas for staff, more green space and a bus stop.
The landscaping and building works respond to consumer feedback with better public transport connections and a more inviting space for patients and visitors.
