Congratulations to 2022 Young Canberra Citizen of the Year Connor Winfield, who has made significant contributions to the ACT community through his volunteering, advocacy and participation in community groups that improve the lives of young people.
Mr Winfield’s openness about his disability and being part of the LGBTIQ+ community has created positive representation and he has excelled in leadership roles.
Minister for Education and Youth Affairs Yvette Berry said all winners and nominees deserve acknowledgement for their exceptional efforts in the local community.
“The Young Canberra Citizen of the Year Awards give our amazing young people a platform for their successes,” Minister Berry said.
“Their contributions make help Canberra a better place for everyone. They are role models for other young people and to us all.”
Mr Winfield said the award – which he received tonight in a ceremony at the QT Hotel, Canberra – validates all his hard work in trying to make a difference in the lives of young people in the ACT.
“It also represents how far I've come personally,” he said. “It's a cliché, but if you told 15-year-old Connor about this he would absolutely not believe it and it proves that I can achieve cool things in life as a disabled person.”
The Young Canberra Citizen of the Year Awards is now in its 33rd year. It recognises individuals and groups of young people aged between 12 and 25 who have made a significant contribution through their personal endeavours or who have been actively involved in the ACT community.
The 2022 award recipients are:

- Young Achiever Award – Veronica Whitnall
- Personal Achievement – Hayley Whatman
- Individual Community Service – Mijica Lus
- Environment and Sustainability – Eco Kids’ Team of St Joseph’s Primary School
- 2022 Arts and Multimedia – Jemuel (MN Cappo) Chadwick
- Group Achievement – The STOP Campaign’s SRT subcommittee
