16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence Begins Today

Released 25/11/2023

Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and the start of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

Women and girls deserve to feel safe and respected.

Today is an opportunity for everyone to reflect on the fact that women and girls still face unacceptable rates of violence from family members and partners.

The ACT Government supports this annual global campaign which seeks to prompt conversations and inspire action to end violence against women and girls.

Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence, Yvette Berry, wants the community to know there are supports and services available to women who have, or are experiencing, domestic and family violence.

“Family, domestic, and sexual violence is a significant public health and welfare concern in Australia. Almost 20 per cent of Australians have reported experiencing family and domestic violence. However, it predominantly impacts women and children. This violence can result in physical harm, psychological trauma, and emotional distress, with long-lasting consequences.”

“1 in 6 women have experienced physical and or sexual violence by a current or previous partner, and 1 in 4 have been emotionally abused. The statistics are confronting and unacceptable.”

“Your safety matters. The ACT Government offers support for women impacted by domestic and family violence. Women don’t have to deal with violence on their own.”

“Women experiencing violence can contact the Domestic Violence Crisis Service or the Canberra Rape Crisis Centre for support. Victim Support ACT is another service and provide free counselling, information about how to report a crime to the police, financial assistance and can refer women experiencing violence to other specialist services to aid in recovery.”

“I encourage everyone to bring the 16 days of activism into your workplace, local clubs and community groups. This is an important discussion we need to be continually having throughout society.

More about the services available to the community can be found on the ACT Government website.

If you or someone you know needs help, you can call the Domestic Violence Crisis Service on 6280 0900 or 1800 RESPECT on 1800 737 732.
