Released 27/01/2024 - Joint media release
Throughout 2024, the Suburban Land Agency Display Village in Whitlam will host regular gardening workshops to help Canberrans with a range of gardening techniques.
Growing Food Through the Seasons is a unique offering in Canberra and aims to give year-long learning opportunities to ensure early plant planning and grow locally in your own garden.
Hosted by Fiona Buining, from the Ainslie Urban Farm, in collaboration with Suburban Land Agency, the monthly Growing Food Through the Seasons workshops will cover a range of gardening basics including different planting techniques, composting, soil health and more.
The workshops are focused on helping you get the best from Canberra’s unique growing climate, teaching you when and what to plant for a supply of produce year-round.
You can learn how to grow delicious food in your own backyard. The ‘Growing Food Through the Seasons’ workshop series held monthly will help you grow a bountiful food garden all year long.
New gardeners are encouraged to attend. Ainslie Urban Farm’s Fiona, has a wealth of experience as an educator and is a passionate about introducing more people to the many benefits of locally grown food.
The workshop series kicks off on Saturday 3 February at the Suburban Land Agency’s Display Village in Whitlam with ‘Planning Your Winter Food Garden’.
The workshop will cover the basics of planning early for a winter garden and which vegetables grow well in a Canberra winter. Best of all, you will get to plant some seeds to take home!
Minister for Suburban Development Yvette Berry said: “Growing your own food is one of the most rewarding, affordable and exciting things you can do in your home garden.”
“As a keen gardener myself, I encourage Canberrans to make the most of these fantastic, accessible workshops.”
