Community to propose initiatives to help renew the city precinct

Released 15/05/2018

The City Renewal Authority is asking the community to help create a program of actions to improve our city precinct.

A review of public consultation exercises undertaken over the past 15 years has revealed six common themes the community has consistently identified in its vision for our city.

The authority is now asking the community to suggest short, medium and long-term actions consistent with those themes to help the city be more people-focused, creative, active, sustainable, connected and progressive.

City Renewal Authority Chief Executive Officer Malcolm Snow said the community’s input would be used to help formulate a Precinct Renewal Program. The program would have a 2030 horizon but also set out the priority projects the authority would implement over the next four years.

“The community has been asked many times what their vision for Canberra is but we are now asking for practical suggestions as to how they believe it can be achieved,” Mr Snow said.

“We reviewed 23 previous ACT Government consultations, which included more than 32,000 pieces of community input, and some recurring themes clearly emerged.

“Canberrans overwhelmingly want their city to focus more on people, to be more creative and active, and for it to be greener, better connected and progressive in it how it looks and works.  We also know that the community will have a lot of different ideas for how those outcomes should be achieved.

“This is an opportunity for Canberrans to put forward the actions they think will best help Canberra become a city that demonstrates the qualities that they have identified.”

The community will be able to contribute ideas through an online consultation. These suggestions and others will then be discussed at a workshop with government, business, industry and community representatives next month.

The City Renewal Authority will use this community and stakeholder input to help formulate its Precinct Renewal Program, which will include medium and long-term initiatives, as well as a schedule of actions the authority will progress over the next four years.

“I encourage all people with an interest in the planned renewal and growth of the city precinct, to get involved in this process,” Mr Snow said.

“We want to hear your views on which initiatives we should be pursuing, this includes projects, policies and actions that you think will help make our city an exemplary place.”

The online consultation is open until 8 June at www.yoursay.act.gov.au/precinct-renewal-program
