Forecast for ‘light clouds’ as city centre joins Enlighten

Released 28/02/2018

The Cloudscape lighting installation was switched on in Bible Lane last night as the first part of the city centre’s role as a precinct partner to the Enlighten Festival.

In its first year as a precinct partner the City Renewal Authority has curated a program of art installations and events to complement the Parliamentary Zone’s traditional Enlighten attractions.

Cloudscape, by Sydney art studio McDermott Baxter, consists of three cloud-shaped light installations – Cumulus, Nimbus and Discobolus – will be suspended in Bible Lane, off Bunda Street, for the duration of the Enlighten Festival.

A series of other city centre attractions will be switched on this week in the lead-up to the festival launch on Friday night.

In City West, the Alinga Street footbridge will be home to the Goldberg Aberline Studio’s Peak Stuff, which is a huge inflatable installation that reflects on the perils of consumerism and a lifetime collecting junk.

The rainbow roundabout in Braddon will have a matching illuminated rainbow light pole at its centre.

Petrie Plaza will be awash with colourful lighting created by WSP Vision Design to highlight existing elements of the area in a magical night time display.

The Canberra Centre will also be home to a large interactive display that will be launched tomorrow (1 March 2018).

In Civic Square, festoon lighting will spread across the temporarily grassed space that will house the Pic&Mix picnic tables. Stop by on Friday or Saturday (2-3 and 9-10 March) and enjoy enlightening entertainment and a pop-up bar.

For those who prefer to be part of the show, the spotlight will be on you at Poet’s Corner in Garema Place. Or you can take part in long exposure photography workshops in Civic Square (2-3 and 9-10 March) or experiment with different lighting sources and techniques at an ACT Lighting Society workshop in Tocumwal Lane (off Bunda Street) on 15 and 16 March (bookings will be required).
