Jellyfish Bloom adds to city centre’s Enlighten experience

Released 01/03/2018

Giant jellyfish that respond to human interaction are the latest offering as Enlighten expands into the city centre for the first time.

Jellyfish Bloom, which features five installations at the Canberra Centre and one in in the Parliamentary Zone, allows visitors to start the Enlighten Festival with an up close encounter with giant jellyfish sculptures that flash when they sense human presence.

The Jellyfish Bloom is one of a number of artistic illuminations and activities in the city centre as part of a new extension of the Enlighten Festival’s footprint, including installations in Petrie Plaza, Bible Lane and on the Alinga Street footbridge.

Created by Sydney-based public art specialists Ample Projects, Jellyfish Bloom is an immersive art installation that incorporates state of the art interactive components and lighting hardware as well as custom designed electronics.

City Renewal Authority director of design and place strategy, Andy Sharp, said the four-metre high light sculptures were a great addition to the inaugural Enlighten in the City component of the festival.

“The city centre is the heart of Canberra and the authority is excited to be part of expanding the festival,” Mr Sharp said.

“We really want people who are visiting Enlighten this year to also visit the city centre after dark to see it in a whole new light.

“As well as interacting with the fantastic Jellyfish Bloom here at the Canberra Centre, which can be enjoyed day and night, the City Renewal Authority has organised some fabulous installations and light-themed activities throughout the city centre for people to enjoy after dark.”

People walking under the Jellyfish Bloom will trigger 3600 colour changing animated LED displays inspired by the bio luminous lighting responses of real world jellyfish.

Executive producer of the Enlighten Festival, Vickii Cotter, welcomed the contribution of the festival’s new partners.

“We celebrate the continuous commitment of Canberra Centre to the vibrancy of festival and welcome the Jellyfish Bloom to the city centre, a new and exciting location offered in partnership with the City Renewal Authority”, Ms Cotter said.

Canberra Centre manager Amanda Paradiso was excited about hosting an installation in the centre after sponsoring the festival for a number of years.

“Canberra Centre has sponsored the Enlighten Festival consistently over the years, in addition to participating each year with sculptures of our own for display in the Parliamentary Zone,” Ms Paradiso said.

“This year we are extending our reach into the CBD and are proud to offer something more unique in the form of our giant bio luminous jellyfish.

“The jellyfish will be on display both in the grounds of the Parliamentary Zone and throughout Canberra Centre for our shoppers to enjoy.”

Canberra Centre joins the capital’s major attractions hosting an array of activities and events including the National Gallery of Australia, National Film and Sound Archives, National Zoo and Aquarium, the Australian National Botanic Gardens, Australian Parliament House, National Arboretum Canberra, the Royal Australian Mint, National Archives and more.
