Garden of Enchantment springs up in the city centre

Released 05/09/2019

Garema Place will transform into an urban oasis for the next six weeks as the City Renewal Authority brings a celebration of spring into the city centre.

The Garden of Enchantment will invite adults and children to take time out to linger in the sunshine, read a book, stretch out on the clover grass or play with the individual elements that create this pleasant and relaxing green area in the heart of the city.

City Renewal Authority chief executive Malcolm Snow said the Garden of Enchantment provided an interactive and appealing public space, with an accompanying program of events for everyone to enjoy.

“Part of revitalising our city precinct is understanding how we use our public spaces during the different seasons and trialling different ways to engage with the community. With Floriade just around the corner, we are delighted to present the Garden of Enchantment as part of our spring program in the city, for children and adults alike to experience,” Mr Snow said.

“Planter boxes filled with tulips and seasonal plantings bring lots of bright colours and different textures to the garden, while a large sculptural magpie and cockatoo lighting installation in the trees above will glow and flash with brilliant vibrant light.

“Visitors can stroll across the Billy Goat Bridge over the pond, skip down Pebble Path, crawl through Bilbies Burrow, play in the Fairy Garden, wander over to the Wishing Well and roll down Humpty’s Hill.”

In addition to the physical elements, the Garden of Enchantment is hosting a program of events throughout the six-week installation, including concerts from the Soul Defender – a truck turned soul music stage, lunchtime acoustic performances, story-telling sessions, lawn games, and children’s entertainment from Lucy Sparkles during the school holidays.

The City Renewal Authority is also working with local business and organisations as contributors to make this a truly collaborative installation in the city. The Green Shed is providing a “little library” for readers, the Canberra Environment Centre will build and maintain a community insect hotel, while West Row Botanica is running a series of workshops on how to make your own flower crown, centrepieces and posies.

“There is something for everyone at the Garden of Enchantment. I encourage the community to come along, relax in this magical space and enjoy our program of engaging events as we spring into the new season.”

The Garden of Enchantment will be in place from 6 September until 20 October 2019. For more information, including the dates of events and activities, visit www.cityrenewalCBR.com.au
