Stretch your view of Civic with free yoga

Released 08/01/2019

Look after your body and mind with free yoga in Civic starting today.

The classes will be run by Joga Yoga with the support of a City Grant, each Tuesday and Thursday for the next 12 weeks.

City Renewal Authority chief executive officer Malcolm Snow said the classes were an opportunity for Canberrans to broaden their idea of what they can do in Civic.

“These free yoga classes are a great way for people to experience Civic differently to how they might normally,” Mr Snow said.

“Civic has some great spaces that are suitable for a wide variety of uses.  We want people to think about how they can make better use of these spaces to increase activity and enjoyment in our city centre.

“You might not instinctively think of Civic’s public spaces as a yoga hotspot, but our grant recipient is confident all participants will get something out of the classes.

“The programs allow you to take a lunchtime break to wind down, stretch the body and clear the mind, or start your day on the right foot with an early morning class before the city gets too busy.

“Our city’s public spaces are there for people to enjoy and yoga is just an example of how people can enjoy these public assets.”

People with all levels experience are welcome at the 45-minute sessions, including beginners, although participants will need their own yoga mat and are encouraged to bring a drink bottle.

There will be two sessions each week and bookings are not required:

  • Tuesdays - 12.30-1.15pm at Latin American Plaza
  • Thursdays - 7-7.45am at Garema Place (some classes at Veterans Park)
