$175,000 in grants to improve Civic and Dickson experience

Released 28/01/2020

Latin lunches, slow fashion and a glass snail are among the 21 recipients who will share in $175,000 in grants funding to make the city centre and Dickson more interesting and exciting.

The City Renewal Authority has awarded about $100,000 to 12 recipients in the latest round of City Grants and $75,000 to nine recipients in the inaugural round of Dickson Grants.

Chief executive Malcolm Snow said the diverse range of recipients across both areas would make them more attractive and enjoyable places to spend time.

“Our grants programs are designed to encourage interesting, fun and beautiful events, installations and activities that help create a better experience for visitors, workers and residents,” Mr Snow said.

“We had a large number of quality applications to choose from and we are very happy with the wide variety of activity that we have been able to fund across the next few months.

“We were also excited to add the Dickson Grants program to our existing City Grants, which have provided some fantastic activities and installations over the past couple of years.”

Both the City and Dickson grants rounds were for grants of up to $10,000 for activity this financial year.

Successful City Grant applications included a Latin Lunches program with food, music and Zumba lessons; a climate-wise edible forest installation; a music and dance festival in Verity Lane; a street art festival in Braddon; and Glass Snail, a bespoke, interactive, playful and family-friendly mobile art-piece.

The inaugural round of Dickson Grants recipients included a slow fashion festival by Trove Canberra; a bicycle cinema, where the projector is run on pedal power; the installation of weatherproof pianos; the creation of an environmental mural; and the refresh of an existing mural by the original artist 10 years on.

“The City Renewal Authority is looking forward to seeing these fantastic projects brightening up our public spaces and creating an even better atmosphere in the city centre and Dickson for everybody to enjoy,” Mr Snow said.
