Artists to celebrate a great day and great place in City Walk

Released 18/11/2020

Artists and community groups are joining forces to create three ground murals in the newly revitalised City Walk for the Great Day, Great Place event tomorrow.

Taking inspiration from the DESIGN Canberra Festival 2020 theme of ‘Care’ artists and community groups have been asked to provide their interpretation of the theme on Civic pavers. This live painting event is a collaborative effort supported by the City Renewal Authority and Transport Canberra and City Services Directorate (TCCS).

“The Great Day, Great Place event aims to generate and nurture partnerships between artists and community groups as well as explore what it means to care for our city places, care for each other, and care for the world,” Chief Executive of the City Renewal Authority, Malcolm Snow said.

“Artists Dale Huddleston, Julia Fulop, Yanni Pounartzis have been selected to create three ground murals in Petrie Plaza and in City Walk, which the Authority recently transformed with more than 3,000 plants and 560 square metres of lawn.

“Public art is an integral element in transforming a space into a great place and helps to create more attractive, colourful places that people want to visit and explore. City Walk is at the heart of our city, and with the new landscaping now complete it offers a wonderful ‘green canvas’ on which the artists and our community can make their mark,” Mr Snow said.

For the live-painting event, Julia Fulop has taken inspiration from the climate crisis and is collaborating with climate action community group SEE-Change in creating her mural.

Dale Huddleston and the Gugan Gulwan Youth are creating a concept that focuses on care for each other and caring for country”

For the third mural Yanni Pounartzis is working with YWCA LGBTI+ group based at Wanniassa High School to create a colourful and optimistic artwork that takes inspiration from the mental health challenges faced by young people.

“We are excited to invite people into the newly revamped City Walk tomorrow to see talented artists working together with community members to make meaningful artwork in our public spaces” Lisa Petheram, Graffiti Management Coordinator from TCCS said.

The event embodies the placemaking principles set out in the City Renewal Authority’s Great Place Guide, which was recently awarded an ACT Planning Institute of Australia commendation and a Good Design Australia Award. The guide is available as a resource for anyone interested in making great places in our city and can be found at www.act.gov.au/cityrenewal/get-involved/great-place-guide.

The Great Day, Great Place event coincides with the DESIGN Canberra Festival 2020, which celebrates Canberra as a global city of design. The City Renewal Authority has taken inspiration to deliver the Great Day, Great Place event, from the graphic interventions work led by DESIGN Canberra.
