Released 15/01/2019
Changes to legislation to help improve, restore and revitalise the appearance of the iconic Sydney and Melbourne Buildings have been released for public consultation.
The proposed changes to the City Renewal Authority and Suburban Land Agency ACT 2017 will allow the City Renewal Authority to work with building owners to create a revitalisation plan, which will set out what improvements building owners need to make to their external facing areas and in what timeframe.
The draft legislation is based on consultation with stakeholders in 2019 and allows the ACT Government to step in and complete works, at an owner’s expense, if they are not completed within the agreed timeframe.
City Renewal Authority acting chief executive Craig Gillman said the initial round of consultation with stakeholders and property owners was productive and has helped guide how the government can overcome the complex ownership challenges to restore and revitalise these Canberra icons.
“As the Sydney and Melbourne Buildings are privately owned, by many different owners, and without a common management body, the overall maintenance of the public facing areas of the buildings, like the colonnades and facades, have been inconsistent for many decades,” Mr Gillman said.
“Late last year we worked with stakeholders, particularly the buildings’ owners, to better understand their views on how best to help revitalise two of our city’s most loved, iconic and important buildings.
“The new consultation draft reflects this feedback and we will continue to work constructively and collaboratively with stakeholders to see these landmark buildings realise their full potential.”
The ACT Government will review mechanisms that may enable and assist improvements to the buildings and consider how government might potentially contribute to the revitalisation works.
The City Renewal Authority will also examine how to work most effectively with building owners, including potentially establishing a working group to facilitate the required works.
The draft legislation is available for public comment until 9 February 2020. To participate in the survey, provide feedback on the revised draft legislation or register your interest in ongoing engagement, visit www.yoursay.act.gov.au
