Dickson Bikefest riding high into town

Released 21/04/2021

The biggest celebration of the bicycle Dickson has ever seen is set to take over the centre this Saturday!

For one day only, visitors can enjoy everything from pedal-powered cinema, e-bike test rides, kids balance bike races, kinetic sculptures, live music and DJs cranking tunes on a bicycle powered sound system.

Presented by the City Renewal Authority in conjunction with numerous bicycle-loving community groups from around Canberra, Dickson Bikefest has something on offer for all ages and types of cyclists from 3pm-10pm this Saturday 24 April adjacent to the Dickson Library.

“Dickson is a hub for cycling activity and active travel in Canberra,” said Jason Mann, City Renewal Authority’s Dickson Place Manager.

“With all the bike communities based in and around Dickson, the idea for a festival to celebrate the bicycle was just too obvious!”

Community groups participating in the event include:

  • See-Change Canberra’s E-Bike Library offering you the chance to test ride electric bikes;
  • The Electric Shadow pedal-powered cinema screening the award-winning cargo bicycle film Motherload;
  • Live Music performances from Mr Tim and the Fuzzy Elbows and Beau Sykes on the Communi-fi Sound System bike;
  • Kids balance bike races on a course designed by the legendary Kowalski Brothers Trailworks;
  • Incredible human powered sculptures from Kinetic Canberra including an info session on Australia’s first Kinetic Sculpture Race to be held in Canberra at the end of October;
  • Mountain bike trail building info from Majura Pines Trail Alliance.

Organisers are encouraging everyone who comes to ‘pimp their ride’ for a Show and Shine with prizes for the Best Bike in Show from local bike store Tune Bikeworks.

After lots of kid friendly activities in the afternoon, participants will be asked to help create human power to screen the Motherload cargo-bike documentary, before the event changes up a gear with DJs set to spin tunes late into the night.

Further information and program details can be found on the event’s Facebook page.
