Transport Canberra invites anyone interested in becoming a heavy vehicle apprentice with ACTION buses to attend an upcoming information session.
“If you have a mechanical mind and an interest in supporting public transport in the ACT, the heavy vehicle apprentice program is for you,” Ian McGlinn, Director, Public Transport Operations, said today.
“We are looking to recruit two full-time heavy vehicle apprentices this year and three Australian School Based Apprentices (ASBA) for commencement in January 2017. The apprentices will undertake four years of study and practical training in conjunction with the Canberra Institute of Technology.
“Apprentices have an exciting opportunity to work on all aspects of ACTION buses from conducting minor servicing and repairs to taking part in completely rebuilding engines and transmissions. Graduates receive a Certificate III in Heavy Vehicle Mechanical Technology upon successfully completing their apprenticeship.
“The program contains everything apprentices need to know about heavy vehicle maintenance. The training is extensive and gives you the chance to learn something new,” Mr McGlinn said.
Dylan Wyms, a fourth year apprentice with ACTION said that, “Working as an apprentice at ACTION is unreal, everyone treats you really well and the working conditions are excellent - I’ve learnt so much since I started my apprenticeship, infact you don’t stop learning.
“All the senior mechanics are really experienced and working alongside them, you always learn something new. Bus technology is always changing so I am always learning - we’re getting new electric buses soon so more new learning on the way!”
Mr McGlinn said that people interested in the program are invited to attend an information session where they will receive an overview of the training program, meet current apprentices and tour the workshop.
“Transport Canberra values diversity in the community in which we serve and encourages applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and people with disability,” he said.
Bookings for the information session are essential and must be received by Friday 23 September 2016. Once registered, people will be invited to the information session to be held early term four. For more information and to register email actionrecruitment@act.gov.au or call 6207 9022.
