Work will start next week on stage 1 of the Northbourne Avenue verge refurbishment project that will start to transform Northbourne Avenue into an inviting boulevard where pedestrians and cyclists can feel safe and move around more easily.
The paths on a 1.5 kilometre section of Northbourne Avenue between Haig Park and Barry Drive/Cooyong Street will be widened from 1.2 metres to 2.5 metres.
Works will commence in Northbourne Avenue’s eastern verge adjacent to Haig Park.
The project, to be carried out by CB Excavations, will also implement a 12-month ‘no bollard’ trial, designed to reduce verge clutter and create a more open verge landscape.
The implementation of further verge improvements on Northbourne Avenue, between Antill Street and Murdoch Street, will be assessed following this first stage of works and will be subject to further funding.
The works were funded in the 2014-15 ACT Budget. Works are expected to be completed in late 2016.
The ACT Government apologises for any inconvenience caused while the path upgrades are underway. Discussions with affected businesses and residents will continue to ensure access impacts on properties is minimised.
Signage will be erected to manage pedestrian, cyclist and vehicle movements during construction.
