Flemington Road and Federal Highway intersection works

Released 22/12/2017

Transport Canberra and City Services (TCCS) is asking motorists to follow the carefully marked detours and allow additional travel time when leaving, or returning to Canberra via the Federal Highway while work on stage one of the light rail project ramps up over the quiet January period.

Important works at the Flemington Road and Federal Highway intersection will require the temporary closure of the intersection for all northbound traffic from 9 January to 25 January 2018. The works will be conducted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during this period.

During these works, there will be no northbound traffic on Federal Highway between Phillip Avenue and Flemington Road, and on Flemington Road between Federal Highway and Randwick Road. All motorists traveling north towards Sydney will need to use alternate routes and follow the clearly-marked detours. Some delays may be expected.

The closure will also prevent right turns from the Federal Highway onto Flemington Road. Traffic travelling southbound, towards the City on the Federal Highway will remain unaffected.

This closure will enable vital work on the light rail project to progress safely at a time when the impact on traffic will be at a minimum.

Detours will be in place to divert all traffic including buses. Highly visible traffic management will be in place throughout the works. Road users are encouraged to observe traffic management signs and personnel.

Detours include (see map):

  • Traffic travelling north from Canberra to Sydney will be detoured along Antill Street or Phillip Avenue.
  • Traffic travelling north to Gungahlin will be detoured via the Barton Highway and Randwick Road or Gungahlin Drive.

Pedestrian and cycle access will be maintained, although there may be some disruption to public transport services. Visit www.transportcanberra.com.au for more information on bus service updates during this closure.

TCCS thanks the public for their continued understanding and patience during these interruptions. For up-to-date information on road closures please call Canberra Metro on 1300 208 824, visit www.canberra-metro.com.au or follow Canberra Metro on social media.
