Crews work to ensure Canberra is a cut above for Christmas

Following recent rainfall across the ACT, grass growth is expected to intensify over the coming weeks. Crews from Transport Canberra and City Services have the blades sharpened and are cutting grass around town in the lead up to Christmas.

“After a slow start to the mowing season, rainfall has now greened up the city and we are expecting the grass to grow quickly,” Director of City Presentation Stephen Alegria said.

“Leading up to Christmas our mowing crews are across the city focussing on parks which are expected to be used by locals and visitors over the holiday period helping to make picnic and social gatherings a more pleasant experience.”

Over the Christmas and New Year period, some mowing crews will be available to mow areas on an as required basis only. From 2 January 2019, operational mowing crews will return to work to undertake normal mowing operations.

It’s a similar story for the tree maintenance crews who are busy making safe many trees that were damaged during recent wet and windy weather. Safety issues like removal of hanging branches are prioritised, meaning that some tree trunks or large branches may be temporarily left on site, awaiting removal in the new year.

“Over the holiday period, we ask for people to please be patient if they notice any overgrown grass. As more operational staff return to work from a well-earned break, areas will continue to be mowed,” Mr Alegria said.

During peak growing times, Canberra’s suburbs will be mowed on the normal four-weekly schedule. The mowing season generally runs until the cooler weather starts in May.

Residents can find out when their suburbs are to be mowed by visiting the TCCS website.
