Traffic switch on Horse Park Drive duplication today

Released 30/05/2018

The duplication of Horse Park Drive will reach a key milestone today with traffic switching to the new carriageway between the Gundaroo Drive/David Walsh Avenue intersection and Mulligans Flat Road.

“The Gungahlin region is growing and Horse Park Drive is a key access road for the region with around 18,000 vehicles travelling on it each day,” said Jim Corrigan, Deputy Director-General City Services at Transport Canberra and City Services.

“The duplication of this important road will help service the thousands of new residents expected in the area over the coming decade. It will increase capacity, reduce congestion and improve safety for all road users.

“Today traffic has partially moved onto the new approximately 1.5 kilometre stretch between the Gundaroo Drive/David Walsh Avenue intersection and Mulligans Flat Road. This traffic switch will provide better access for the construction team to complete works at the intersections and in the median area between the two carriageways.

“The traffic lights at the intersection of Horse Park Drive and Mulligans Flat Road are already operational and slight adjustments will be made following today’s traffic switch. The traffic lights at the intersections of Francis Forde Boulevard and Katherine Avenue North are expected to be operational in third quarter 2018, with the current traffic arrangements at these two intersections remaining as they are,” said Mr Corrigan.

Construction has also started on the duplication between Well Station Drive and the Federal Highway. It includes:

  • duplication of the road to provide two lanes in each direction
  • a new three metre wide shared path along the southern side (Kenny side) of Horse Park Drive
  • a new road bridge and shared path bridge over Sullivans Creek
  • resurfacing of existing carriageway to ensure it matches the road condition of the new carriageway
  • better access to the parking area for the Goorooyarroo Nature Park.

“The ACT Government thanks everyone for their patience while this important road duplication continues,” Mr Corrigan concluded.

Motorists are advised that the existing Goorooyarroo south car park will be temporarily closed during construction and moved approximately 1.7 kilometres east towards the Federal Highway. Drivers are asked to be mindful of the changed traffic arrangements and adhere to the work zone speed limits.

The entire Horse Park Drive duplication between the Federal Highway and Katherine Road West is expected to be completed in first quarter 2019 (weather permitting).
