Interim updated weekend bus timetable announced

Released 20/09/2019

An interim updated weekend bus timetable commencing Saturday 28 September is now available online.

“The interim weekend timetable increases reliability for customers wishing to take trips on weekends, while maintaining the most popular elements of the new public transport network,” Judith Sturman, Executive Group Manager of Transport Canberra Operations said.

“The frequent rapid services – which make up 70% of boardings remain, along with regular local services. Extended hours of coverage, including later night services on Sundays and public holidays will also be maintained in the timetable.

“The interim weekend timetable including light rail will still provide an additional 501 services over Saturday and Sunday, compared to the previous timetable that ran until April this year.

“We know that weekend services are popular, with over 165,000 more passenger journeys taken on public transport on weekends since the implementation of the new network, compared to the same period last year. This equates to around a 30% increase year on year.

“With the key aim is to give customers certainty and a reliable service, and I acknowledge that the reduction will mean that some customers will need to review their trips during this interim period.

“We’ve worked closely with Transport Workers Union and driver representatives on the timetable to ensure we maintain an expanded weekend service which, importantly, will also improve reliability, with some adjustments also made to improve connections between services.

“Transport Canberra is continuing to recruit more bus drivers so we can be confident of providing a return to the weekend network timetable in coming months.

“A total of 68 new drivers have signed up for training since 29 April, with 36 of these now on the road driving buses. A further 250 applications have been received since mid-July 2019.

“I would encourage customers to familiarise themselves with the new weekend timetable ahead of its commencement on 28 September.”
