Further works to upgrade Northbourne Avenue start next week

Released 19/05/2021

Road users are advised that work to improve the road surface of two sections of Northbourne Avenue will begin next week with lane closures expected to commence from 24 May 2021.

This project will improve the condition of the road and reduce the need for regular maintenance. As well as benefiting motorists, the many cyclists who use this section of road will enjoy a smoother journey.

Timing and location of the works

Northbourne Avenue between Greenway Street and Macarthur Avenue (northbound)

From Monday 24 May 2021, rehabilitation work will commence on the northbound lanes of Northbourne Avenue between Greenway Street and Macarthur Avenue. Works include the removal of the existing road pavement, repairs to kerbing and stormwater drains, placement of new road pavement and line marking.

The majority of the works will be carried out as dayworks between 5 am and 3 pm Monday to Friday and
7 am to 4 pm on Saturdays. To minimise construction times and impacts to motorists, we may carry out a portion of the work as nightworks. This is expected to be towards the end of construction when we do the final layer of the road surface.

Work will commence from the inside lane (closest to the light rail corridor). To complete these works as quickly as possible, the following changed traffic arrangements will be in place between Greenway Street and Macarthur Avenue during work hours:

  • between the hours of 5 am and 3 pm: one lane of traffic will be open
  • between the hours of 3 pm and 5 am: two lanes of traffic will be open.

In addition, Greenway Street will be closed in both directions between Northbourne Avenue and Forbes Street for the duration of construction. Construction vehicles only will be granted access.

These arrangements are expected to be in place for approximately two months with all works expected to be completed in July 2021 (weather permitting).

Northbourne Avenue between Antill Street and Wakefield Avenue (southbound)

In June 2021 resurfacing works including asphalt patching of any cracks in the road surface and asphalt resurfacing will be undertaken on the southbound lanes of Northbourne Avenue between Antill Street and Wakefield Avenue. They will be carried out as nightworks over four nights with a full road closure between the hours of 7 pm and 5 am.

The local community and road users will be informed via road signage which will be installed seven days prior to works commencing.

Effects on traffic

  • Delays are expected.
  • A reduced speed limits of 40 km/h will be in place for the duration of the works.
  • Motorists are advised to seek an alternate route where possible.
  • Signage will be in place to alert people to the road works.

Effects on pedestrians and cyclists

During these works, all pedestrian crossings (both signalised and unsignalised) will be under the guidance of traffic controllers. Pedestrians and cyclists are asked to please follow the instructions of traffic controllers and signage when crossing Northbourne Avenue.

As part of these works, the on-road cycle lane will also be improved. This will require its closure for the duration of this project. During this time, cyclists will have the option of remaining on the road, noting there will be no designated cycle lane, or making use of the off-road footpath. Signage will be in place.

Effects on public transport

There will be no impacts on light rail services.

If temporary disruptions are required to bus routes, signage will be placed at the bus stops and updates will be available at www.transport.act.gov.au.

Canberrans are encouraged to take alternate routes where possible to avoid delays and ensure these works can be delivered safely.

Works on Northbourne Avenue are part of ongoing improvements across the ACT road network designed to improve safety for all road users. These works are jointly funded by the Australian and ACT Governments.
