Plan your trip and catch free public transport to avoid parking hassles this Australia Day

Canberrans celebrating Australia Day tomorrow are encouraged to plan their trip and catch free buses to ensure a stress free public holiday for everyone around the city.

With a free barbeque and kids’ entertainment at Stage 88 in the morning, the National Flag Raising and Citizenship Ceremony with flyover and 21 gun salute at Rond Terrace and the concert and fireworks at Regatta Point in the evening, there is something for everyone to celebrate this Australia Day.

Canberrans are reminded that buses will be running to a Sunday timetable on Thursday 26 January 2017. However, event attendees to the Australia Day in the Capital concert and fireworks can take advantage of a number of special bus services.

A free Shuttle Bus will operate from 3.30pm until 10.30pm, travelling in a continuous loop from the Parliamentary Triangle car park, Anzac Park East car park, Anzac Park West car park, CIT car park, Civic Pool car park to Regatta Point.

The Shuttle Bus stops will be signposted, providing an easy way for event attendees to move around the city.

At the conclusion of the fireworks, free services will be provided to major bus stations (Gungahlin Marketplace, City, Belconnen, Woden and Tuggeranong) departing from Commonwealth Avenue bus stop at Regatta Point and Albert Hall stops (north and south).

These services will depart regularly from 9.30pm with the last service leaving at approximately 10pm. Passengers travelling to the Tuggeranong Bus Station will be required to change buses at the Woden Bus Station, with seats subject to availability.

Car parking will be available at the following locations:

  • Parliamentary Triangle car parks
  • Anzac Parade East and West car parks 
  • Civic Pool car park, Civic (take the footbridge near the Civic Pool over Parkes Way to Commonwealth Park).

Temporary road, car park and path closures include the following locations:

  • Rond Terrace Car Park, Parkes Way (5.30am to 11pm)
  • Blundells Cottage Car Park, Wendouree Drive (5.30am to 11pm)
  • Shared path along RG Menzies Walk, Regatta Point (5.30am to 11pm)
  • Barrine Drive Car Park, Parkes (5.30am to 11pm)
  • Barrine Drive from Albert Street East to Albert Street West (5.30am to 11pm)
  • Corner of Albert Street and Regatta Place, Parkes (5.30am to 11pm)
  • Commonwealth Avenue Bridge – eastern lane, southbound (5.30am to 11pm)
  • Commonwealth Avenue Bridge - eastern walkway (5.30am to 11pm)
  • Shared path along RG Menzies Walk, Rond Terrace (8am to 11am)
  • Regatta Point car park (except for VIPs and pass holders) (4pm-11pm)

Commonwealth Avenue Bridge will also be temporarily closed during the fireworks display from
9pm to 9.15pm and the Central Basin of Lake Burley Griffin from 6am to 12midnight. Barriers and warning signs will be erected to alert people of the closures. Detours will be in place.
