More support for Canberra’s entertainment scene and night-time economy

Released 20/12/2019

The ACT Government has introduced new measures to support our growing city and build on our night-time economy by relaxing noise restrictions on Friday and Saturday evenings in our urban centres.

More people are choosing to live in areas which offer a lifestyle of convenience and closeness to restaurants, live music entertainment venues, with nightlife hotspots one of the draw cards.

Legislative changes to noise restrictions under the Environment Protection Regulation 2005 come into effect on Tuesday 24 December 2019. These will extend the daytime noise limits on Friday and Saturday evenings from 10pm till midnight in the City and Town centres and till 11pm in our Group centres.

This means that people can enjoy our active night-time economy in our urban centres later into the evening. Canberra’s major urban centres already have some of the highest noise limits in the country.

These changes reflect current and emerging activities in our urban centres and form part of the ACT Government’s broader plan to explore ‘entertainment areas’ throughout Canberra. Further consideration of noise regulations will be undertaken as we start to roll out the Entertainment Action Plan in coming months.
