Work to upgrade Northbourne Avenue starts next week

Released 14/08/2020

Road users are advised that work to improve the road surface of a section of Northbourne Avenue will begin next week with lane closures commencing from Monday 17 August 2020.

From Monday 17 August 2020, rehabilitation work will commence on the northbound lanes of Northbourne Avenue between Macarthur Avenue and Mouat Street. Works include the removal of the existing road pavement, repairs to kerbing and stormwater drains, placement of new road pavement and line marking.

This project will improve the condition of the road and reduce the need for regular maintenance. As well as benefiting motorists, the many cyclists who use this section of road will enjoy a smoother journey.

Timing and location of the works

The majority of the works will be carried out as dayworks between 6 am and 4 pm Monday to Friday and
7 am to 4 pm on Saturdays.

Work will commence from the inside lane (closest to the light rail corridor). To complete these works as quickly as possible, the following changed traffic arrangements will be in place between Macarthur Avenue and Mouat Street from Monday 17 August 2020:

  1. between the hours of 6 am and 3 pm: one lane of traffic will be open
  2. between the hours of 3 pm and 6 am: two lanes of traffic will be open.

During work hours Murdoch Street will be closed in both directions between Goodwin Street and Northbourne Avenue. Access will be provided to residents on this street and construction vehicles only.

These arrangements are expected to be in place for approximately three months with all works to be completed before the end of the year (weather permitting).

Effects on traffic

  1. Delays are expected.
  2. A reduced speed limits of 40 km/h will be in place for the duration of the works.
  3. Motorists are advised to seek an alternate route where possible.
  4. Signage will be in place to alert people to the road works.

Effects on pedestrians and cyclists

During these works, all pedestrian crossings (both signalised and unsignalised) will be under the guidance of traffic controllers. Pedestrians and cyclists are asked to please follow the instructions of traffic controllers and signage when crossing Northbourne Avenue.

As part of these works, the on-road cycle lane will also be improved. This will require its closure for the duration of this project. During this time, cyclists will have the option of remaining on the road, noting there will be no designated cycle lane, or making use of the off-road footpath. Signage will be in place.
