ACT Government campgrounds now open – friendly hosts required

Released 14/11/2016

Campgrounds in ACT nature reserves closed due to safety concerns last month will reopen today (Monday 14 November), Tim Chaseling, Area Manager of the ACT Parks and Conservation Service said today.

“Due to the wet Spring and a couple of near misses where trees fell at the Blue Range and Orroral campgrounds we made the decision to close all grounds for safety reasons,” Mr Chaseling said.

“The combination of saturated soils and windy spring conditions is dangerous, especially if you have people camping close to or underneath trees.

“However the warm drying weather of the last few weeks has relieved our concerns and after careful consideration, we have decided to re-open the campgrounds as previously forecast.”

The opening of the campgrounds coincides with the start of the Campground Host Program.

The ACT Parks and Conservation Service is inviting those with a passion for people and the outdoors to nominate for this rewarding volunteer program.

Trained hosts will assist campers by promoting walks and activities, directing people to facilities, updating information boards, providing information on local attractions and help keep the campground clean.

“The ACT program operates throughout the year at Woods Reserve and Cotter campground.

“It’s a new approach to having a holiday,” Mr Chaseling said.

“If you are suitable we’ll induct you as a campground host and you can use your people skills to help each visitor having a really memorable holiday. As a host, you’ll go away with memories shared with campers too, maybe over a campfire or from bushwalking.

“If you’re a Cotter campground host then you’ll be provided with a place to stay in the fully equipped on-site hut. And while dogs aren’t allowed in national parks, the Woods Reserve is something else to consider where you and your pooch can be the campsite hosts under the light of a million stars.”
