Canberra lakes bolstered with release of native fish

Released 16/12/2019

Christmas has come early today for Canberrans looking to enjoy our urban lakes over the holiday period with the release of more than 39,000 native Murray cod into recreational fishing lakes.

Tens of thousands of young Murray cod fingerlings were released today into Yerrabi Pond, Gungahlin Pond, Isabella Pond and Upper Stranger Pond.

“To help ensure our lakes have healthy populations of native fish, the ACT Government undertakes an annual fish stocking program in partnership with the National Capital Authority,” ACT Government senior ecologist Dr Lisa Evans said.

“Today’s release of fish is great news for local anglers, with more opportunities to enjoy our ACT Waterways.

“The stocking of recreational fish species in Canberra's urban lakes helps in the conservation of native species by relieving fishing pressure on the more fragile rivers and streams in the ACT.”

Dr Evans said a further 21,000 Murray cod were also released today into Lake Burley Griffin with support of the National Capital Authority.

The release of these native fish is part of the ACT Fish Stocking Plan. Over one million fingerlings have been stocked into our local lakes and ponds since 2000.
