Canberrans are invited to have their say on proposals for new place names at Dickson shops, Kingston Foreshore and Monash that celebrate diversity and gender equality.

ACT Surveyor-General, Greg Ledwidge said the proposed names at Dickson and Kingston celebrate the outstanding contribution of two women and two men from our community.

“I’m delighted to invite the community to comment on new place name proposals for three streets, a public area in Dickson group centre and the unnamed boardwalk along Kingston Harbour,” Mr Ledwidge said.

“Development at the Dickson shops has prompted a review of wayfinding and addressing around the centre. As a result, the ACT Place Names Advisory Committee has suggested names for two un-named roads, the area of public space in front of the library and a renaming of part Dickson Place.

“In Kingston, the committee welcomes feedback on its suggestion to name the wooden boardwalk that surrounds the Kingston Harbour as the ‘Colin Stewart Boardwalk’, in honour of the architect who was instrumental in the foreshore’s design.

“The ACT Place Names Advisory Committee is also calling for suggestions of names of female Australian engineers for a cul-de-sac off Clive Steele Avenue in Monash that provides access to the Canberra Islamic Centre and an adjoining parcel of land.

“The Monash theme is ‘Engineers’ so it would be fantastic to receive suggestions that recognise women in engineering and diversity in our community,” Mr Ledwidge said.

In Dickson the committee is inviting feedback on suggestions to:

  • name the road leading into the Dickson centre from Badham Street as ‘Hanna Enders Lane’ in commemoration of the local resident and community volunteer who was co-founder and president of Dickson Neighbourhood Centre
  • name the road into the centre from Cowper Street, opposite the Dickson Swimming Pool, as ‘Joan Kellett Way’ in commemoration of the long-time Dickson resident, volunteer, and advocate for public education and swimming
  • name the public place in front of the Dickson Library as Taglietti Square to commemorate the library’s designer, acclaimed Canberra architect Mr Enrico Taglietti AO
  • rename part Dickson Place, running between Badham and Cowper Streets, as Dickson Street to indicate it is a through road.

Consultation closes on Wednesday 26 July 2023. Find out more at the YourSay conversations webpage.
