Murray Cod fishing season re-opens in the ACT

Released 30/11/2023

The Murray Cod fishing season will commence in the ACT from midnight tonight under the Fisheries Act 2000.

ACT Conservator Flora and Fauna Bren Burkevics said from 1 December, Canberrans will be able to enjoy fishing for Murray Cod in ACT’s waterways but must comply with regulations to ensure the conservation of the species.

"Fishing is a recreational activity enjoyed by many Canberrans. To help balance recreational objectives, regulations exist to ensure that the Murray Cod is not overfished and its presence and breeding potential in the ACT maintained”, Mr Burkevics said.

“In most areas of the Murrumbidgee River the bag limit is one Murray Cod per day, and in other open waters such as Lake Ginninderra or Lake Burley Griffin, it is two per day, with a size limit ranging from 55 to 75 centimetres in any water body.

“Downstream of Uriarra Crossing is a no take zone for Murray Cod, and all fishing is prohibited from Angle Crossing to Gudgenby River.

“As part of the ACT Government’s $5.8 million investment in the ACT Budget 2023-24 towards conservation activities, the fisheries team has expanded to provide enhanced levels of community engagement and nature regulation activities.

“This includes conducting and monitoring fish stocking, managing urban fish habitat improvement projects, and educating and working with the angling community to improve fishing resources and management.

”Please plan ahead and prepare accordingly when venturing into the ACT’s outdoors. Protect the ACT’s environment by taking your rubbish with you and ensure that you comply with fishing regulations to keep the ACT’s waterways healthy and abundant with native fish.”

Murray Cod fishing seasons opens from 12.01am on Friday 1 December and will remain open until 31 August 2024.
