Refill Canberra is ‘good to go!’

Released 22/01/2019

Cafes across the ACT are being urged to sign up to offer Canberrans free tap water to refill their drink bottles while out and about.

ACT Health spokesperson Emily Harper said the campaign with Icon Water has a multifaceted impact for the health of Canberra’s community and its environment.

“In this heatwave across the ACT, launching Refill Canberra is a timely reminder to Canberrans to stay re-hydrated. It’s vital for our health,” Ms Harper said.

“Tap water of course is the healthiest option and here in Canberra we have high quality drinking water, on tap. With cafes across Canberra joining this campaign by placing a sticker on their windows indicating they’re refill-friendly, we can give our community greater access to a much-needed healthy resource.

Icon Water’s Managing Director Ray Hezkial said Icon Water is proud to partner with the ACT Government on Refill Canberra.

“This will make it even easier to stay healthy and hydrated during Canberra’s extremely hot summer months.

“Icon Water provides Canberrans with some of the best quality water in Australia,” said Mr Hezkial.

“Refill Canberra is also a great initiative that celebrates the generosity of local businesses participating in our community,” Mr Hezkial said.

“Refill Canberra is contributing to an increasing number of population health initiatives the ACT Government is offering the community that aims to make the healthier option the easy option,” Ms Harper said.

“For busy parents keen to give their children a quick drink, rather than reach for the sugary option, Refill Canberra means parents near participating cafes, can instead fill a bottle with healthy Canberra water.

“In addition, Refill Canberra will contribute to reducing the rate at which plastic water bottles are used.  Single use plastic bottles are 500 times more carbon intensive than simple tap water,” Ms Harper said.

Refill Canberra is ‘good to go!’ already at Knox café in Canberra’s north. Cafes are encouraged to find out more at health.act.gov.au/refillcanberra
