Sharks on the lookout for the next healthy bite

Released 19/03/2019

Speaker Joy Burch MLA today announced the winner of the 2019 Healthier Food and Drink Product Design Competition at a Shark Tank event last night.

The Chapter 5 team stole the show with their distinctive product ‘Fryzz’, a healthier carbonated fruit drink, which proved that there is a lot to get excited about when talking healthier food options.

As part of the ACT Health’s Healthier Choices Canberra initiative, culinary and design students from the Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) and design students from the University of Canberra (UC) used their creativity, innovative thinking, and marketing and design skills to develop food products that are nutritious, appealing to young people and suitable for sporting and school canteens in the ACT.

Ms Burch, representing the Minister for Health and Wellbeing at the event said, “Initiatives such as Healthier Choices Canberra highlight the importance of engaging young people in the conversation about healthy lifestyles.

“We know that more than half of Canberrans would like to see more healthier food and drink options at junior sport.
“More than 20 per cent of children aged 5 to 17 years in the ACT are overweight or obese, and this is a serious issue that our community needs to tackle.

“The Government is improving the health and wellbeing of all Canberrans by supporting initiatives that help drive culture change around healthy eating.

“Supporting innovative concepts have the potential to make it easier for young people to choose wholesome food and to encourage them to endorse healthier lifestyles.

“As a judge on the panel, I am impressed with all the creative pitches that we heard at last night’s event, which shows that by working together, Canberra’s uni and CIT students have once again delivered the product that ticks all the boxes.

“Big congratulations to the winners,” Ms Burch said.
